How to Convert a GIF to Animated WebP

1. Choose a local GIF

Drop an animation or select it from your device. GifLoom reads the complete source locally before offering a result.

2. Set quality and convert

Choose a quality setting and let the browser encode each composed frame. The converter packages the still frames as one animated WebP with timing and transparency.

3. Preview and download

Compare the original and result sizes, watch the animation, and download the WebP when it looks right.

What Is Animated WebP?

Animated WebP is a WebP image file that holds multiple frames, their display times, and loop information. GifLoom composes optimized GIF frame updates into complete pictures, encodes each picture as WebP, then writes the frames and timing into one animation container. The conversion happens on your device.

WebP and GIF quality

WebP supports transparency and quality options beyond GIF’s indexed palette. This tool uses the browser’s WebP encoder; output detail and file size can vary by browser and source image. The quality slider is a setting, not a promise that the result will be smaller.

Still frames versus an animation

To save separate still images instead of a new animation, extract every GIF frame as PNG. For GIFs that need a lighter file but must remain GIF, compress GIF file size instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the WebP file keep the GIF animation?

Yes. GifLoom converts every complete frame and preserves frame delays. Infinite GIF loops remain infinite, while a finite repeat setting is translated to the equivalent total number of plays; very short or missing GIF delays use a stated 100 ms assumption.

Will transparency be preserved?

When the source GIF uses transparency, the frame composition and WebP output retain transparent pixels. Color detail may vary with the selected quality and browser encoder.

Can I choose the conversion quality?

Use the quality slider to adjust browser WebP encoding from 50% to 100%. Lower values can produce smaller files with more visible compression; actual size and appearance depend on your GIF.

Will the WebP always be smaller than the GIF?

No. Animation content, frame complexity, and browser encoder settings affect the result. GifLoom shows both file sizes and reports when the WebP is larger. Compare the preview before downloading.

Are the file or frames uploaded?

Files never leave your browser for conversion. GifLoom decodes and composes frames in a local Web Worker, then creates the animated WebP on your device.

What are the processing limits?

The input limit is 50 MB, 1,000 frames, 4 million canvas pixels per frame and 40 million total canvas pixels. Encoded WebP output is limited to 50 MB and processing stops after 90 seconds.

Why might conversion fail in my browser?

The tool needs Worker, OffscreenCanvas and browser support for encoding image/webp. It rejects incomplete GIF data and unsupported frame structures instead of returning a partial animation. Try a current browser and a smaller GIF.

Can I convert several GIFs at once?

This page handles one GIF at a time. Download the result, remove the selected source, then choose another file. Batch conversion is not available.

Does the WebP keep every color and exact appearance?

WebP can encode lossy or lossless image data, but this browser-based converter uses the browser’s WebP encoder at your chosen quality. Colors or fine details may vary; check the animated preview.

Will every app play animated WebP?

Animated WebP support depends on the browser, operating system and destination. Check the receiving app before replacing a GIF that must work in a specific service.
