Choose a GIF to plan its clips.

The GIF’s loop setting is kept on every clip. A frame across a cut is shared between neighboring clips with its delay divided. Source delays below 20 ms or missing delays use a 100 ms assumption; 10 ms output waits may play differently by viewer.

Frames are re-encoded, so colors may change slightly. Source and combined output limits: 50 MB, 1,000 frames and 40 million canvas pixels. Up to 10 clips; processing stops after 90 seconds.

    How to Split a GIF

    1. Choose a local animation

Drop in one GIF or load the built-in sample. GifLoom reads the complete source on your device, including frames it may later reuse at a cut.

    2. Pick a pattern or enter cut times

Choose two, three or four equal sections, or enter cut points in ascending seconds. Each point uses GIF’s 0.01-second timing units. The last segment ends at the source cycle’s end.

    3. Preview and download the clips

GifLoom shows each segment in one preview. Download any GIF on its own, or save every segment in a single ZIP archive. A short final segment is preserved.

What Does It Mean to Split a GIF?

Splitting separates one animation cycle into distinct animated files by time. It preserves their original order and gives each clip its part of the timeline. It does not extract only one still image or join several source GIFs.

    Frames at the cut

If a cut crosses a frame’s waiting time, that image is included in both neighboring clips and each receives its share of the delay. This keeps the combined timeline continuous when the segments are viewed in order. A boundary exactly between frames does not add an extra image.

    Frame composition and timing

Optimized GIFs often store a small patch instead of a whole image. GifLoom composes the source in order, including its clear-background and restore-previous instructions, before building the segments. The stated 100 ms assumption for very short or missing delays is an editing policy; another viewer may interpret those source files differently.

    Color and archive contents

Complete frames are re-encoded as GIFs and may have slight palette color changes. The ZIP stores these separate clips without an additional compression pass. Each segment retains the source dimensions, transparency and loop setting.

    Splitting vs. extracting frames

Choose time splitting when each result should remain animated. A frame extractor produces individual still pictures for contact sheets, thumbnails or image editing. These are separate tasks; this page creates only consecutive animated segments.

For another kind of edit, trim a GIF to one moment, merge GIFs in a chosen sequence, or change GIF speed without dividing its timeline.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split an animated GIF into parts?

Choose one GIF, then select two, three or four equal clips, or enter exact cut times in seconds. Select Split GIFs to create the clips, preview one at a time, and download individual files or their ZIP. Processing stays in your browser.

Can I choose where each segment starts?

Yes. Select Custom times and enter cut points in increasing order, such as 0.50, 1.25. The first clip starts at the beginning; the last ends at the end of the source cycle. Each cut is precise to 0.01 seconds.

How many clips will a split create?

One run creates two to ten clips. Equal-length presets create two, three or four parts; use custom cut points for another count. A very short GIF may not have enough 10 ms time units for so many non-empty segments.

What happens when a cut falls in the middle of a frame?

That image appears in both neighboring clips, with its waiting time divided at the cut. The two waits add up to the original wait. A cut exactly between frames does not add an extra image.

Do the clips keep their animation?

Each part contains the frames overlapping its time interval, in source order. A short final part is kept when the cycle does not divide evenly. A one-frame segment remains still instead of gaining motion.

Are transparency and the loop setting retained?

Each part keeps the original canvas, transparency and loop setting. GifLoom reconstructs complete pictures from optimized source frames before cutting. Another viewer may handle short frame waits differently.

Can I download the segments together?

Yes. Download all as a ZIP to save every clip in one archive, or download one GIF from the segment list. The ZIP contains these same individual GIFs; it does not join them into one animation.

Will split clips keep the original colors or become smaller?

GifLoom re-encodes complete frames with a GIF palette of up to 256 colors. Colors may change slightly, and a clip can be larger than its optimized source frames. Splitting does not guarantee smaller files.

Why was my GIF or split plan rejected?

The complete source is checked, including frames outside the selected clip boundaries. Limits are 50 MB input and combined downloads, 1,000 source and output frames, 4 million pixels per frame, 40 million total canvas pixels, ten clips and 90 seconds. Choose fewer or shorter clips, or use a smaller valid GIF.

Are my file, cut times or names uploaded?

Files never leave your browser for splitting, and the ZIP is assembled on your device. Optional analytics run only after consent and record generic tool events, not filenames, cut times, image bytes or archive contents. Exported clips use fixed GifLoom filenames.
