01Turn it around.

The last frame plays first. Each frame keeps its own delay, and the original loop setting stays with the animation.

  • Same canvas dimensions
  • All frames, in reverse order
  • GIF transparency retained

Up to 50 MB input and output. Reversal supports 4 million pixels per frame and 40 million total frame pixels, with up to 1,000 frames.

What Does a GIF Reverser Do?

A GIF reverser changes the order in which an animation’s pictures appear. A ball that falls now rises; a drawing that appears stroke by stroke now disappears. The canvas stays the same, and the output is still a GIF.

GifLoom first reconstructs the complete picture shown at each moment. That matters because many GIFs store only a small moving patch in later frames. Reversing those patches without their backgrounds would leave missing pieces or trails.

Reversing is different from flipping

Reversing changes time: the last frame becomes the first. Flipping mirrors the picture from left to right or top to bottom. This tool reverses playback; it does not mirror the image or add a forward-and-back sequence.

How to Reverse an Animated GIF

01

Choose your GIF

Drop one GIF into the box or select it from your device. The sample lets you try the tool first. Files open in your browser’s memory and are not uploaded.

02

Reverse the frames

Select Reverse GIF. GifLoom builds the complete frames, then writes them from last to first in a local Web Worker. You can cancel while it works.

03

Preview and download

Watch the original above and the reversed animation below. Check the displayed frame count, dimensions and bytes. Download the reversed GIF when it looks right.

Keep the Timing, Change the Direction

A delay belongs to its frame

If three frames last 50, 100 and 200 milliseconds, the reversed frames last 200, 100 and 50 milliseconds. The sum stays 350 milliseconds. Stored zero and very short delays are retained, although browsers may play them at a minimum supported duration.

Loops and transparent areas

The input’s loop setting is retained, including a finite loop count or the absence of a looping instruction. Transparent areas remain transparent. A checkerboard in the preview helps you see them and is not added to the downloaded image.

What can change

GifLoom writes a new GIF using full visual frames. The result can contain different palette colors and use more bytes than the original. This is not a lossless binary rearrangement, and it does not promise a smaller file.

Made for a Short Rewind

Use a backwards reaction, reverse a short demonstration, or turn a familiar motion into something unexpected. A one-frame GIF is accepted, but it has no movement to reverse. This tool works with GIF files rather than video or links to GIF-hosting websites.

Long or large animations need more browser memory because complete frames must be retained before their order can change. The input and output limit is 50 MB, with up to 1,000 frames, a 4-million-pixel canvas and 40 million total frame pixels. A job stops after 90 seconds so you can try a smaller or shorter source.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reverse a GIF online?

Choose a local GIF and select Reverse GIF. The frames are reconstructed and reordered on your device. Watch the result, then use Download GIF to save it. No account is needed.

Will the reversed GIF stay animated?

Yes, every input frame is retained. Only their order changes; each visual frame keeps its stored delay. A GIF with one frame remains a still image. Pausing the preview does not remove animation from the file.

Does reversing change the speed?

The stored duration of the complete sequence is retained. Each delay travels with its frame, so a pause at the beginning moves to the end. Browsers can clamp very short delays during playback. This tool does not add a separate speed adjustment.

Are transparent GIFs supported?

Yes, transparent areas stay transparent in the reversed output. Frames are rebuilt before they are reordered, including their original clearing and restoration instructions. Opaque black is kept separate from the transparent palette entry. Re-encoding may still alter some colors.

Will the dimensions or format change?

The original width and height are retained. The output is a GIF, without a watermark. Reversing does not crop, mirror, or convert it to a video. Use the separate resizer if you need a different canvas.

Why is my reversed GIF larger?

Some GIFs save space by storing tiny changes instead of full frames. Reconstructing and encoding full pictures in reverse can need more bytes. GifLoom reports the actual result rather than returning an unreversed original to save space. The compressor can help if the destination has a byte limit.

Can I reverse a GIF twice?

Reversing the downloaded result again restores the original frame order and stored timing. Repeated palette encoding can alter colors and file size. Keep the original when possible instead of repeatedly editing exports. GifLoom does not retain files after you leave the tool.

Can I make a forward-and-back loop?

This release produces backwards playback only. It does not append a forward copy or create a boomerang sequence. The original loop setting still applies to the reversed sequence. No extra frames are added.

Why was my GIF rejected?

The file may be damaged, use an unsupported GIF extension, or exceed a local processing budget. Renaming another format to .gif does not convert it. Choose the original valid GIF or reduce its dimensions with the resizer. Processing errors do not upload the file anywhere.

Are my files uploaded or saved?

GIF files never leave your browser for processing. Selected files, completed frames and results live in local memory, without an account or server copy. Removing the file, replacing it or leaving the page clears the tool’s references. Optional website analytics are controlled separately through Cookie settings.
