Choose a GIF to set the interval.

The end is excluded. Cuts use 0.01 s steps; very short delays may play differently between viewers. Source delays below 20 ms or missing delays use a 100 ms assumption.

Frames are re-encoded, so colors may change slightly. Up to 50 MB input/output, 1,000 source frames, 4 million pixels per frame and 40 million total source frame pixels. Processing stops after 90 seconds.

How to Trim a GIF

1. Choose a local GIF

Drop one animated GIF into the picker, or use the built-in sample. Its preview shows the full original animation; the time controls describe one estimated cycle.

2. Set the opening and closing times

Enter a start and end in seconds. For example, 0.50 to 1.50 keeps a one-second moment. Check the estimated duration and retained frame count before processing.

3. Preview and download

Select Trim GIF to build your selection. The result preview shows the exported sequence, with a pause control and a download button. Changing either endpoint clears the previous result so it cannot be mistaken for the new selection.

What does a GIF trimmer keep?

A GIF is a series of pictures separated by timed waits. A trimmer keeps the pictures and waiting times that overlap a chosen interval. GifLoom includes the start and excludes the end, so an endpoint exactly on a frame boundary does not add an extra frame.

Pictures that depend on earlier frames

Optimized GIFs often draw only a small patch. Removing earlier patches without rebuilding the image could leave an incomplete first picture. GifLoom composes frames in order, follows background clearing and previous-frame disposal, and exports complete pictures for the retained interval.

Cuts inside a waiting time

When an endpoint lands inside a frame’s delay, only the overlapping wait is kept. GIF timing uses 10 ms units. An output wait of 10 ms is possible, but some viewers lengthen short waits. The displayed duration describes encoded timing under the tool’s stated source-delay assumption.

Color, transparency and bytes

Frame composition and palette encoding can change colors slightly. Transparent pixels stay transparent, and the original canvas and loop setting are retained. A full-frame encoding may be larger than an optimized input even after frames are removed; no size reduction is guaranteed.

Trimming, cropping and speed

Choose trimming when the reaction starts too early or continues too long. Spatial cropping would remove edges from every picture; this tool does not change that area. A speed change keeps the full sequence but makes its waits shorter or longer. For that task, change GIF speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I trim an animated GIF?

Choose one GIF and enter the start and end in seconds. Select Trim GIF, then preview the new animation. Download it when the selected moment looks right. GIF files never leave your browser for processing.

Can I cut the beginning or end off a GIF?

Yes. Move the start forward to remove an opening, or move the end earlier to remove a closing. The interval is taken from one estimated source cycle. The original file on your device stays unchanged.

Can I keep a moment from the middle?

Set both endpoints around the part you want. GifLoom renders the earlier source frames so the first retained picture has the background and prior drawing it needs. Only pictures that overlap your interval appear in the output.

How precise are the start and end times?

Inputs use 0.01-second steps, matching GIF’s 10 ms delay units. A cut within a frame shortens that frame’s waiting time at the edge. A viewer may lengthen very short delays, so the estimated cycle is not a guarantee of identical playback everywhere.

What if a GIF has zero or missing frame delays?

GifLoom uses a 100 ms assumption for source delays below 20 ms or without a timing control. This creates a usable editing timeline and is shown in the result. It is a tool policy; another viewer can interpret those frames differently.

Does trimming preserve transparency and looping?

The selected pictures are composited on the original canvas and GIF transparency is retained. The original looping setting is reused for the trimmed sequence. If a file has only one retained picture, it stays a still image rather than gaining motion.

Will the colors or file size change?

The retained pictures are re-encoded with a GIF palette of up to 256 colors. Colors may change slightly, and full-frame output may take more bytes than an optimized source. Fewer frames often help, but trimming does not guarantee a smaller file.

Is trimming the same as cropping or changing speed?

Trimming chooses a time interval. Cropping removes part of each picture’s spatial area, while a speed change adjusts the waits between pictures. This tool keeps the original width and height and does not offer spatial cropping.

Why was my file or interval rejected?

Choose a start before the end, within the estimated source cycle. Input and output are each limited to 50 MB, with up to 1,000 source frames, 4 million pixels per frame and 40 million total source frame pixels. Damaged or unsupported GIFs are rejected, and processing stops after 90 seconds. A short selection still needs the full source to fit those checks.

Are GIFs uploaded, and can I cancel?

Files never leave your browser for trimming. Cancel processing or change an endpoint to discard the old result, then run it again. Optional analytics record consented page and tool events without filenames, GIF contents or chosen times. Downloaded files remain under your control on your device.
