How to Reduce GIF Size for Discord

A 1.2 MB reaction that fits in chat is still too large for a custom emoji. This walkthrough shows how to make it smaller while keeping the part that makes the reaction work.

1. Keep the part that matters

Save the original so you can start over. If the reaction happens halfway through, keep just that moment. If you want two different reactions, split the animation and compress each clip separately.

2. Resize before reducing colors

Use the GIF resizer with the aspect ratio locked and Keep animation on. For an emoji, make sure the expression still reads at a small display size. A smaller canvas can save bytes while keeping the full frame sequence.

3. Compress and check the download

For a 256 KB emoji limit, try the 250 KB preset in the Discord GIF compressor. Read the actual byte count and watch one full loop. If important frames disappeared, start again from the original and trim or resize first.

Try it with the built-in sample

Open the compressor and choose Try a sample GIF. Set the target to 100 KB and leave the other settings at their defaults. In our Chromium test, the 122,382-byte original became an 80,004-byte GIF. It kept its 2.52-second loop, with 24 frames instead of 36. Your results may vary by browser and source GIF.
